Product Review: Too Faced Summer Eyes Summer Sexy Shadow Collection

Summer Eyes35For 2012, Too Faced released a summer eyeshadow palette that included some bright, pretty summer colors. That palette was limited edition and not all of us were able to get our hands on it. But fortunately Too Faced has released their Summer Eyes shadow collection again for 2013. It’s limited edition again this year so if you want it, get it before it disappears.

The ProductSummer Eyes34

Summer Eyes’ packaging is very similar to the new packaging Too Faced debuted for the Boudoir Eyes palette. It’s a metal exterior with a magnetic closure, the inside of the lid holds a fold-out booklet with three guides to achieve each of three looks, which coordinate with the nine eyeshadow pans housed inside the bottom of the palette.

Although the packaging is very similar to what Too Faced used for the Boudoir Eyes palette, it isn’t exactly the same; it’s a little larger overall, has a plastic piece in the base around the nine eyeshadow pans, and has a mirror behind the look book inside the lid of the palette.

In tried and true Too Faced fashion, the nine eyeshadows are divided into three rows, each coordinating with a look: day, classic, and fashion. The day look includes the highlight shade Seashell, mid-tone Plumeria, and defining shade Cocoa Beach. The classic look includes Peach Fuzz, Coral Crush, and Chocolate Sun. Finally, the fashion look is Sunbeam, Mermaid, and Toasted Coconut. Here’s a description of each color:

  • Seashell is a completely matte peach.
  • Plumeria is a bright, slightly cool-toned, metallic pink.
  • Cocoa Beach is a satin finish, plum-chocolate shade with golden micro-glitter.
  • Peach Fuzz is a sheer yellow-peach shade with a matte base and golden micro-glitter.
  • Coral Crush is a bright, satin finish coral.
  • Chocolate Sun is a deep chocolate brown with a matte base with a slight plum undertone and golden micro-glitter.
  • Sunbeam is a sheer, warm yellow shade with a soft satin base and yellow micro-glitter.
  • Mermaid is a medium-deep, shimmery, satin-finish teal.
  • Toasted Coconut is a slightly satin finish, warm milk chocolate shade.

The ReviewSummer Eyes33

Although I loved the old Too Faced cardboard packaging, I really love the new packaging, it’s slimmer, feels more sturdy, and instead of three loose look cards, there’s one fold-out booklet, which keeps everything together nicely.

As far as changes from Boudoir Eyes to Summer Eyes, I really love the plastic base around the eyeshadow pans, but I’m not entirely sure why the palette is larger overall. The mirror is a fantastic idea; a mirror is the one major thing that was missing from the Boudoir Eyes palette. I don’t think the palette really needed to be larger to accommodate the mirror, but it isn’t that big of a deal. Also, the look book now includes an instructional diagram and a realistic picture showing the finished product for each look.

Now, onto the good stuff: the eyeshadows in this palette area beautiful. The textures are amazing, the colors are gorgeous, and they all blend and work together wonderfully. The three highlight shades: Seashell, Peach Fuzz, and Sunbeam are relatively sheer, and appropriately so, but the rest of the shades are all very pigmented. Did I mention that I really love this palette? I really love this palette! I very rarely wear bright, colorful eyeshadow looks; I’m more of a Naked Basics kind of girl, but this palette has me wearing and loving bright, fun, summer colors.

A few of the shades: Seashell, Chocolate Sun, and Mermaid had a slightly powdery texture when applied heavily without a primer; however, when I swatched them with a primer. When I’m wearing eyeshadow, I don’t apply nearly as heavily as I do when I’m swatching; used lightly, all the shadows had a wonderful texture.

My favorite shadows are Plumeria, for it’s bright color and incredible texture and Toasted Coconut for its versatility and texture. I love how they look paired together; The cool pink of Plumeria is great for emphasizing the green in my eyes and Toasted Coconut is a perfect crease color for my fair skin – it isn’t too dark, it leaves a perfect contoured, sun-kissed look.

Mermaids really do have more fun ;) This palette is awesome – it has the perfect mix of bright and neutral shades for summer and is neither too warm or too cool overall. The new packaging is great; it travels and wears well. The addition of a mirror is also convenient. $36 is a reasonable price for a high end eyeshadow palette.
