Color Tattoos are somewhere between a cream and a gel; they apply like a cream eyeshadow product, but set like a gel to be long-wearing, up to 24 hours. They can be worn alone, sheer or built up to full opacity, or used as a primer or base for powder eyeshadow products. The 5 Color Tattoos in the Metal collection, like the 10 in the standard line and all the limited edition releases, are housed in a clear glass pot with a black, plastic, twist-off lid.
55 – Inked in Pink is a cool, soft, light metallic pink.
60 – Silver Strike is a frosty, metallic, shimmery silver; a very true silver.
65 – Gold Rush is a shimmery, bright, true yellow gold.
70 – Barely Branded is a soft shimmery satin finish ivory beige shade.
75 – Electric Blue is a deep, but still bright, shimmery indigo blue.

I really love Maybelline’s Color Tattoos. They’re long-wearing, creamy, easy to apply and blend, and significantly more budget-friendly than their high-end counterparts. The formula is great and only seems to keep improving with each additional release.
Of all the colors, I’m sure I’ll get the most use of Inked in Pink and Barely Branded. I really love easy to wear, feminine neutrals… and pink. Pink isn’t exactly a nude, but I love wearing it. I’m sure I’ll get the least use of Electric Blue since I don’t frequently wear blue or very dark colors, but it’s a beautiful color. Silver Strike and Gold Rush are both wearable metallics that can be used for either a neutral, easy look or incorporated into darker, smokier looks.
I’m not particularly fond of the packaging Maybelline chose, the glass pots are heavy and the entire portion that’s visible when the pots are closed doesn’t actually contain any product. I would prefer if the pots were slimmer making them lighter and more travel friendly. However, the benefit of having thicker, heavier glass pots is that if you drop one, it’s unlikely to break… I know from experience :)
Maybelline Color Tattoos are a great buy. I love the formula and only wish they had a broader color selection. If you’re looking to try out just one as a base for your other eyeshadows, I would recommend Barely Branded for its versatility. The best part is that all of these are part of Maybelline’s permanent line so they’re readily available! $5.94 at Walmart, Target; $6.99 at Walgreens, CVS, Ulta
Have you tried any of Maybelline’s Color Tattoos? What do you think of long-wearing cream eyeshadows? Let me know in the comments below :)
