Cult Classics: Clinique Almost Lipstick – Black Honey

Clinique Black Honey3

Cosmetics products come and go, even great products. We’ve all had that favorite powder or lipstick discontinued :( But others are immediate favorites and seem to stay around forever. These are cult classics: products that seem to work for everyone and are so great and loved by so many people they just don’t go away… or, in the case of Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, they do go away, but then they come back because of overwhelming demand.

The Product

Clinique’s Almost Lipsticks provide a sheer, buildable tint of color with just a bit of a glossy finish. According to Clinique “transparent pigment merges with the unique, natural tone of your lips to create something wonderful and yours alone. Sheer, glossy. Emollient-rich and very lightweight.” Black Honey claims to be a universally flattering shade that looks a little different on everyone. It’s housed in a slim, sleek, silver tube.

The Review

This product has earned it’s cult classic status. It may look scary dark in the tube, but it’s a sheer, buildable color. What I love about Clinique’s Almost Lipstick products in general and Black Honey specifically is that they make darker hues wearable. I have very deep brunette hair and very fair skin; I love the contrast of a deep color on my lips, but I don’t want to look like I’m attending a costume party. Sheer formulas like Almost Lipstick and shades like Black Honey make deeper hues look great and feel comfortable.

The packaging is also nice: the cap fits securely and the slim tube is purse friendly. However, the satin finish half of the tube is somewhat prone to scratching in harsh environments like my purse. My only other complaint about the packaging is that it’s much longer than it needs to be. In the picture below, I’ve shown the entire product twisted up… it’s about a third the total length of the tube.

The Skinny

Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey is great – it’s the perfect lip product for everyday wear and truly looks great on anyone. It can be applied sheer or color can be built up. It’s moisturizing without being too greasy or slick on the lips. The packaging is elegant and slim. The price tag is a bit steep: $15 for 1.9 g of product, but so worth it.
