Lip products seem to be trending towards more moisture rich, less pigmented lip products and I absolutely love it! They have more shine and feel more comfortable than traditional lipstick products. They also provide a sheer wash of color that is far more wearable than their highly pigmented counter parts. While this new wave of wearable lip products may not have the lasting power of a highly pigmented lipstick, they leave lips much softer and are far more user friendly.
One of the newest of these wearable lip products are Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks. While the shade range is limited, they’re all very neutral, wearable shades.

Neutrogena touts their latest release as instantly moisturizing lips, while also continuously conditioning them so there is improvement in the condition of your natural lips, without any product on them, in three days. They’ve made these jumbo pencils with fruit extracts, mango, and shea butters, giving them a soft, smooth, balm-like feel. They are supposed to provide a sheer wash of color, supposedly lasting for hours. The twist up packaging means you don’t need a sharpener, which is great for travel, and you won’t waste product sharpening a traditional pencil.

Neutrogena’s retractable jumbo pencil packaging is convenient, travel friendly, and easy to apply; their buttery smooth formula glides on nicely and feels like a balm, while providing just enough color. My only complaint about MoistureSmooth Color Sticks is that they aren’t offered in even more colors, particularly a true red. However, the eight shades Neutrogena has produced are all very nice, wearable colors. All eight shades have a little shimmer to them, but I don’t feel like there’s a color that I can’t wear on an everyday basis, but even so, there’s enough variation in the shades to accommodate almost any look.
Although MoistureSmooth Color Sticks feel like a balm, they don’t seem to have quite as much lasting moisture as an actual lip balm. They seem to improve the condition of my lips more than applying nothing at all; however, I always apply a lip balm before bed so I can’t say for sure that they have any long term moisturizing effects.
All eight shades have the same light, sweet, fruity scent. It’s fairly strong in the stick, but after application it’s much lighter, though still noticeable. If you do not like scented lip products, the scent may be too strong, but I like it. It isn’t overwhelming and smells really yummy.
MoistureSmooth Color Sticks feel like a dupe of Yves St. Laurent’s Volupte Sheer Candy Glossy Balm Crystal Colors, which are $32 each. Not all of the colors are dupes, but the formula feels dead on.
MoistureSmooth Color Sticks are great. They’re a moisturizing, travel-friendly, everyday lip product. All eight shades are wearable and offer sheer color with just enough glossy shine. The formula is a great dupe for YSL’s Sheer Candy Glossy Balms, but at a far more attractive price. $8.99 at Ulta, Walgreens; $7.99 at target.com
